What is a frame carrier?
Frame carriers are backpack carriers with sturdy metal frames that resemble hiking rucksacks. These carriers are generally used for hiking and other outdoor activities. Most frame carriers are made by outdoor and camping product suppliers who understand the needs of hikers and campers well so the carriers are comfortable for both the parent and child during long distance walks and hikes.
Frame carriers are the most structured of all carriers. Children are generally placed in the carrier while it rests on the ground while built-in kick stand prevents the carrier from toppling over. They have padded shoulder straps and waist straps that can be adjusted to suit the wearer’s comfort level. The unique design of frame carriers allows for the addition of special features like sun canopies and storage compartments.
This type of carrier is designed for use with toddlers and preschool aged children and is not recommended for younger infants.
What positions can be used with a frame carrier?
While frame carriers can only be worn on the wearer’s back, the child can typically be worn either facing the wearer or facing out.
Why choose a frame carrier?
A frame carrier is the best carrier when you will be walking for extended periods of time or while hiking because they are able to distribute the child’s weight so that you can remain comfortable. While frame carriers are the perfect option for serious hiking, they tend to be too heavy, bulky and awkward for daily babywearing.
If you are interested in wearing your child on your back, but don’t need the added structure of a frame carrier, consider taking a look at the Back Carriers available at Baby Carriers Direct.
